Part 1: What do we need to protect and why? (Amy C; 15 minutes)

- We don’t want to convince you based on a doomsday scenario. There are BIG scary problems and we’ll do things to help protect you from them. But more importantly, privacy is a right (*as a minor, you should talk with your parents about exercising this right within the context of their care and protection). This is about learning exercise agency over that right. Learning when to exercise it, when to protect it, when you might be willing to compromise it a little and why. Making informed decisions about your rights. Many people don’t have the understanding or freedom to make these kinds of choices. We want you to have it.
- The inevitable response we get is "I don't get why privacy is important. I don't have anything to hide!"
- “Privacy is not about hiding - it is about autonomy, power and control; it is about your ability to decide how you present yourself to the world.” (Source)
- You don’t know what’s being collected and how it’s being used
- You don’t know who is accessing and sharing the data, from where, and why
- You DO have things to hide
- Your friends and family might and they’re also at risk
- You might have more to protect in the future, more risk and more need to protect your personal information

💡 Reminder: Security/privacy is a relational process and never fully achievable. We believe, however, that incremental decisions we make about our privacy can have big impacts.
